The Dewey Does character was created in 1998. This annual contest is designed to promote artistic creativity, educational research and imagination among our youth. The Dewey Does community will view characters and sports from all over the world.
The Dewey Does Character Awards were initially created to encourage our youth to share their unique and creative ways of customizing their own sports character to appear on tee shirts, PSA campaigns and other printed material. Our goal is to help youth learn about different sports, cultures and to develop artistic imaginations. Youth from all over the world will view each other’s artistic work; learn about different sports characters and personalities as well as new sporting events never seen before.

Entry requirements
There are a few minimum requirements that determine whether an entry can be accepted.
- All contestants must be 12 years of age or younger. We encourage parent and teacher help.
- All entries must be submitted in Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), Microsoft Word (.doc), Tiff, or JPEG format (.jpg).
Judging criteria
Within each category, entries will be judged using the same judging criteria.
- Appropriate content (5 percent) does the character fit the sport category? Is the character suitable for public use? We won't presume to judge whether or not it's art, but if it is not acceptable for elementary school print material, it will not be accepted here.
- Dewey Does Brand (5 percent) does the character embrace the Dewey Does 110% brand promise? This doesn't mean it needs to have our logo, but each entry will be judged on its contribution to organization and clear communication. The character design has to be comic as in humorous and not marvel.
- Technical specifications (5 percent) are the files format JPG, PDF or Microsoft Word and are it a minimum size: 400 pixels width by 400 pixels height? Are all the fonts (if any), images and colors embedded in the file?
- Ease of Use in Various Marketing Campaigns (10 percent) can the file be downloaded easily? Can my grandmother open and successfully print the file? The answer doesn't have to be yes to these questions, but they could really help your score. Keep in mind we can't judge a file we can't open and print!
- Overall design (10 percent) is the layout clean? Does the design communicate well? Is it unique in design and interesting to wide audience of Dewey Does viewers? Each contestant is entitled to submit more than one design, but only one will be qualified in the final poll.
- Overall organization (20 percent) does this character help general Dewey Does viewers learn more about the sport and intrigue viewers to listen to the character? Is the sports character cool and exciting to watch?
- Character Name (20 percent) is your character’s name interesting, memorable and sports related? Does the name make the Dewey Does viewers think of the sport? Is it creative? Make us say WOW!
- Character History (25 percent) do your research. Make the Dewey Does community want to learn more about your character’s sport. Have fun with the development of the character. We encourage unusual sports that the Dewey Does community can learn about.
